Landslide hazards mitigation study center opens in Manipur University

Correspondent

Center of Excellence Landslide Hazards Mitigation was on Thursday opened at Manipur University under the funding of the North East Frontier Railway (NEFR).
The centre was opened after a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Manipur University and North East Frontier Railway (NEFR) to set up the Center.
The Center will study and suggest suitable technical precautions to mitigate landslide hazards to NEFR while constructing railway lines in the areas under the jurisdiction of the frontier including in the ongoing Jiribam-Imphal railway line construction.
The Center will also study and suggest the remedial measures for stability of the slopes along the railway line from Jiribam to Imphal and adjacent hill slopes in the state, officials said.
With the signing of the MoU, vice chancellor of MU Prof N Lokendra Singh inaugurated the Center at MU campus in the presence of officials of the university and NEFR.
The university provided the space and building for the Center as per the MoU to be functional with the funding of the NERF.
The Centre will also attempt to develop an early warning system for landslide hazards as per the requirement of railway traffic on the Jiribam-Imphal alignment.
General manager Anshul Gupta of the NEFR said that NEFR would like to adopt suitable technical precautions in the expansion of the railway network in the northeast region.
MU vice chancellor Prof N Lokendra Singh hoped that the Center will help the NEFR to find out ways and means of mitigating the natural disasters.
The university is willing to provide all necessary assistants to the railway authorities, he added.
The NEFR, to mention here, had decided to take experts’ suggestions after the recent catastrophic landslides at a railway construction site at Marangching in Manipur Noney district that claimed over 56 lives.
The disastrous landslide at the railway construction occurred on the intervening night of June 29 and 30 last year.
