Effigies of AICC leaders were torched in Imphal by ruling BJP in Manipur to protests against Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s remark on President Droupadi Murmu.
Members of the BJYM on Thursday converged in front of the Imphal Congress Bhavan located in the heart of the capital city and torched the effigy of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi today, around 10 am.
While torching the effigy, some members also threatened to beat those in the MPCC office with sticks while challenging the police on duty who tried to restrain them.
They also shouted various slogans against the AICC leaders and declared that they will work tirelessly to root out Congress from the soil of Manipur.
Protesting against Congress MP’s remark on President Draupati Murmu, the BJYM members said they were retaliating to a recent burning of effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah by Congress workers who had protested against the Enforcement Directorate’s summoning Sonia Gandhi repeatedly.
The Congress has shown its uncivilized and disrespectful attitude by burning effigies of the Prime Minister and Union home minister, Barish who talked to reporters during the protest said.
“It is not a thing to be done. BJYM cannot tolerate,” he said declaring that BJYM will work tirelessly to root out Congress from the soil of Manipur.
The protest held in front of Imphal Congress Bhavan by members of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) Manipur Pradesh angered the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) who in turn carried out a protest rally and lodged a written complaint against the BJYM leaders at City police station.
MPCC named six key leaders of the BJYM, including its state unit president Barish Sharma, in the complaint and set a 24-hour deadline to arrest them and initiate legal actions.
On the other hand, registering strong denunciation of the ‘violent activities’ of the BJYM members, MPCC lodged a written complaint to the City police station in the afternoon.
The MPCC lodged their complaint with a protest rally from Imphal Congress Bhavan to the City police station which was blocked by the police midway. Only some leaders were allowed to proceed and lodge a complaint to the OC.
Talking to reporters, MPCC general secretary Jiten Soibam alleged that the BJYM members had attempted to ransack the MPCC office. They also manhandled police personnel on duty there.
He said the incident on Thursday was not the first time BJYM members set afire effigies of AICC leaders in front of the MPCC office.
He alleged that they had earlier targeted the MPCC office and though the MPCC had lodged a complaint to the police, no legal action was initiated against the BJP workers involved in the case.
If the police did not arrest six BJYM leaders whose names were enclosed in the written complaint within 24 hours, the MPCC would knock at the door of the relevant court, he added.
Earlier, a large number of state BJP leaders and workers staged a protest rally against Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s remark on President Droupadi Murmu.
At the concluding part of the rally, the BJP workers led by its state president A Sarda Devi torched effigies of Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury at Keishampat Junction.
Speaking to reporters, Sarda Devi accused Congress leader Chowdhury of disrespecting Murmu by calling her ‘Rashtrapatni’.
She claimed that Chowdhury has disrespected the entire tribal community, women, poor and the downtrodden by his remark.
She demanded an apology from Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Chowdhury to the people of the country.
The Congress should also immediately stop such attacks on the tribal community, women, poor and the downtrodden people of the country, she added.
