Manipur CM announces Rs 23.4815 cr for 15,450 weavers and boatmen

Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Sunday announced financial assistance of Rs 23.4815 crore to around 15,450 handloom weavers and boatmen of the state.
The assistance will be distributed through DBT, Singh said, in his address at the inaugural function of the MANITEX (Manipur International Textile Expo) at the Urban Haat in Imphal Nilakuthi today.
The expo which will continue till November 14, 2022 and is organized by the state directorate of handlooms & textiles.
The chief minister, who acknowledged womenfolk’s contribution in the state’s economy, said, “Our people have the potential, talents and especially womenfolk are courageous and brave.”
The state’s Ima Keithels (all-women-run markets) have garnered respect and popularity in national and international platforms, he added.
Considering some businessmen’s attempt to monopolize the yarn business, he said the government has decided to establish a wholesaler of yarn at Ima Keithel so that weavers can get them at cheaper price.
The chief minister said that the state government has also instructed shops and business houses not to sell machine made traditional items in view of the instances of importation of machine made traditional clothes like the Khudei, Phanek, enaphi, etc., by from outside the state.
State textiles, commerce & industry minister Nemcha Kipgen said MANITEX has the main objective of showcasing the state’s handlooms, handicrafts, dyeing and printing, power loom, garment, embroidery and costume to the outside world.
The expo will also have a fashion parade, she added.
This year, the expo has 274 stalls including local weavers, artisans, entrepreneurs, local private companies, national level organizations, international stalls from Thailand, Bangladesh and Myanmar, food court, state government departments, etc.
