Manipur polls: 6 NPF workers booked for vandalism

As many as six workers of an NPF candidate were booked under various sections of IPC and Representation of People’s Act, 1951, an official source said on Sunday.
As per reports, the voting was in progress on Saturday, around 40 workers and supporters of NPF candidate D Korungthang from Tengnoupal AC ransacked a polling station opened at Leilam Centre of the AC.
Tengnoupal AC is among the 22 Assembly constituencies spread across 10 districts of the state where voting was held in the second and final round of the two-phase polls on Saturday (March 5).
Apart from ransacking polling materials, including the EVM, they also threatened polling officials on duty.
A security team that was rushed to the polling station, intercepted the six persons said to be workers of and NPF candidate when they were leaving the polling station after committing vandalism.
A video showing security personnel detaining them has also gone viral in social media platforms.
An official source said that the security personnel handed over the six NPF workers to the Tengnoupal police station on Saturday.
The police conducted preliminary verification and took them into custody after registering a FIR case.
Sources said that as per the FIR, the six workers allegedly threatened people, obstructed government employees in discharging their duties, and damaging public properties by ransacking EVMs and other election related documents.
In the FIR, it was reportedly stated that the acts of the six persons amounted to committing crimes under various sections of IPC and violation of Representation of People’s Act, 1951.
The Tengnoupal police have initiated an investigation into the charges leveled against the six arrested NPF workers, the source said.
The second and final round of the two-phase polls for the Manipur Legislative Assembly was held on Saturday. Despite intensified security measures, sporadic incidents of violence marred voting at several polling stations across the 22 ACs.
In a firing by security personnel on poll duty at a polling station in Senapati district where miscreants tried to capture EVM, a worker of the BJP candidate was killed and another sustained critical bullet injuries.
