M’laya govt to sue TMC spokesman

The Meghalaya government is considering legal action against Tirnamool Congress (TMC) national spokesperson Saket Gokhale for having made “false, malicious and disrespectful claims” relating to the alleged financial irregularities amounting to Rs. 632 Crore.
Gokhale alleged largescale financial irregularities to the tune of Rs 632 crore in the Meghalaya Ecotourism Infrastructure Development Project (MEIDP) headed by an IAS officer D Vijay Kumar. The TMC spokesperson claimed that irregularities happened under the company Meghalayan Age spearheaded by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s top aide Vijay Kumar. “Meghalayan Age Ltd. is a government-run company founded in 2020 and it is responsible for implementing the Meghalaya Ecotourism Infrastructure Development Project for which the Meghalaya govt has taken a loan of Rs 632 crore from the New Development Bank (NDB),” Gokhale said.
However, despite floating tenders and RFPs, the company has yet to reveal a single name of the contractor who may have been awarded the tenders, he claimed , adding that undue favors taken by the Meghalayan Age, the Meghalaya Ecotourism Infrastructure Development Project has taken over road constructions that technically belong to the PWD (Public Works Department).
A majority of projects under the Meghalaya Ecotourism Infrastructure Development Project are construction of roads which technically falls under the ambit of PWD Roads but is instead being undertaken by Meghalayan Age Ltd, the statement said.
Claiming that no financial report has been filed by the company to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs since 2020, Gokhale further alleged that there was no transparency in appointing consultants or the process of awarding the projects worth crores.
Countering Gokhale’s claims, Commissioner and Secretary Planning department, Dr. Vijay Kumar said, Gokhale has made such motivated and inaccurate claims in the past and it appears that the sole intention behind the recent press statement is to mislead the public.
Moreover, he also informed that the Meghalayan Age Limited (MAL) is a State Govt company under the aegis of the Planning Department, which has been incorporated under Section 2 (45) of the Companies Act, 2013.
