Moolamylliang, a village in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district is celebrating Christmas and the “festival of democracy” with election-themed decorations and lighting to create awareness about the importance of exercising one’s franchise responsibly.
The residents of the village have decorated all the trees in the village and also the surroundings with themes surrounding the upcoming state assembly elections in 2023.
In one such decoration, a map of Meghalaya was carved out using the support of the trees with the message Meghalaya Election 2023, your voice, your choice. The display of the election-themed Christmas illumination will remain till January 2.
Moolamylliang is a village under Saipung block in East Jaintia hills district of Meghalaya and is about 100 kms away from Shillong, the state capital of Meghalaya. Covered with lush green forest , Moolamylliang is also a base camp for tourists to explore caves, canyons and waterfalls in parts of East Jaintia Hills.
The village is also known for its cleanliness, much like Mawlynnong in Southern slopes of Meghalaya, one of the cleanest villages in Asia.
The houses and streets at Moolamylliang are clean, trees planted in every nook and corner and both the young and old ensure there is no littering.
Moolamylliang suffered the worst brunt from coal mining during the last two decades. But, the village leaders have the vision and foresight to focus on other sustainable forms of livelihood like tourism.
Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Roy Kharkongor attended a programme held to illuminate the lights at Moolamylliang and thanked the village council for creating election awareness during the festive season.
“Election-themed Christmas lighting adorns the Christmas village, Moolamylliang in Meghalaya to celebrate the festival and the upcoming festival of democracy,” Kharkongor tweeted.
The Election Commission of India under its flagship programme, the Systematic Voters’ Education & Electoral Participation has been creating awareness among voters to participate in a free and fair election.
Every year, villagers from Moolamylliang organise the annual Christmas lights festival. The entire village is lit up and decorated with bright and colourful lights and decorations.
In 2021 Christmas celebrations, Moolamylliang villagers lit up the village with the golden jubilee celebrations theme, coinciding with Meghalaya’s 50th year of statehood.
