Monyiü festival celebrated in Dimapur, Longleng

DIMAPUR: Dimapur Yachem Bihu Pangthai (DYBP) celebrated Phom Monyiü festival at Allijo Eralibill, here on Saturday. The festival which was attended by young and old in traditional attires was celebrated with pomp and gaiety.
Delivering the welcome address, DYBP president, O Yanger said the festival was celebrated as a day to seek bountiful blessings.
Host of the festival, minister for Health & Family Welfare, S Pangnyu Phom in his speech said the day was celebrated to foster unity and create a cordial relationship among the community.
Pangnyu also stated that it was also a time to retrospect and let the younger generation learn about customary practices while also making strong efforts to rediscover and preserve their rich heritage.


Significance of the festival was delivered by BDO Sakshi, M Takochungba.
Meanwhile, in the exhortation speech, directorate of agriculture, Kohima, joint director S Yongchang Phom informed that the community celebrated the festival for six days (April 1-6) every year.
Yongchang said it was a spring festival normally celebrated after sowing was done in paddy fields.
He said it was also a time of jubilation, sharing of love and concern with relatives and friends.
DYBP former president, Osangtemjen Lungkongly also exhorted the gathering that it was a time to seek forgiveness from each other and create strong relationships.
The programme was chaired by Ongsham Angh and Heni Sosoly, invocation was said by DPBA senior pastor C Hamba Nemdakly, special number was presented by Dimapur Yachem Students union, poem recitation by E Lylen Mokholy and folk song by Dimapur Yachem Yükha.
Later, vote of thanks was delivered by Monyiü organising committee convener, T Yemok Phom.
The programme was followed by the festival feast. (Staff Reporter)
Longleng: Yongnyah Union Longleng celebrated its first edition of Phom Monyiü in Longleng district on April 1, at Public Ground Longleng.
According to a DIPR report, all the union members, both young and old, joyfully joined the cultural festivities that included folk dances, folk tunes, folklore reflections, log drum beatings and varieties of traditional cuisines. Trongdiba Tongpi, SDO(C) Longleng & incharge Yongnyah EAC HQ and H. Phongshing Phom, chairman, Yongnyah Village Council graced the occasion as special Monyiü guests.
The day-long event ended in all gaiety with the gathering enjoying the Monyiü feast, traditionally called Monyiü Nükham.
It may be mentioned that Monyiü is the main festival of Phom Nagas celebrated throughout the first week of April every year
