Staff Reporter

The felling operation involving 403 fully grown tree species, planted in 1992, from Nagarjan police traffic point towards Circuit House Dimapur has been successfully completed.
Informing this to Nagaland Post, deputy commissioner (DC) Dimapur Sachin Jaiswal said the operation was carried out within the five-day time frame and that restriction of vehicular movement from Old Dhansiri bridge till Nagarjan police point has been relaxed.
In order to carry out the tree felling exercise, no-objection certification (NOC) had been given by the Forest department he said.
The responsibility for felling the trees and sectioning them was given to environmental activist Ronika Miachieo and chief manager waste management Amos Ezung. It was also learnt that the duo were also awarded the work for beautification and development of the area cleared of trees.
Meanwhile, assistant conservator of forest (ACF) Vivika Sema told this reporter over telephone, that sectioning and loading had already started.
On the beautification of the area, he clarified that the particular NGO was not chosen by the Forest department but that the recommendation was given by the Development Authority of Nagaland (DAN) since the area was under DAN.
According to Vivika, a collective decision was also taken during the Dimapur District Planning Board (DDPB) meeting and accordingly the order was also passed.
Vivika also admitted that he was unaware about the project presented by two environmentalists since he was not part of the DPDB meeting.
This raised questions on the process for selection since there has been no public tender floated for the purpose.
It may be mentioned that the tree felling exercise was carried out after two vendors were killed and six injured when two trees uprooted by gusty winds, fell on them on October 12 afternoon.
