Naga Students’ Union Shillong (NSUS) and its federating units in collaboration with well-wishers observed ‘Naga Plebiscite Day’ on the theme “Rekindling Our History” at Shillong on Monday.
In a press release, NSUS informed that the programme was held with an objective to bring together all the Naga students, scholars and elders residing in Shillong, to have a discourse on the importance and legacy of the “Naga Plebiscite 1951”.
In his presidential address, NSUS president Imeka Z Awomi delivered greetings from NSCN (I-M) ato kilonser, Th. Muivah, where he echoed the message of unity among the Nagas and called on the youth to carry forward the cohesive spirit of Nagas.
In his virtual greeting, Niki-led NSCN (K) president, ‘general (retd)’ Niki Sumi stressed on unity among Nagas as “the top priority in achieving the common goals.”
The NSUS president also conveyed greetings from various “Naga nationalist groups”, student bodies, civil society organisations (CSOs) and well-wishers.
Pinning on the objective of the programme, a documentary clip on Naga Plebiscite was shared with the gathering, followed by exhortation from Naga Research Scholars’ Forum (NRSF) convenor Tiatemsu Longkumer.
Speaking at the programme as resource person, NEHU professor, Xavier Mao gave an exposition on the theme and explained how the Naga Plebiscite gave birth to the consciousness of “Nagas as One”.
He pitched for unification of all the Nagas and articulated a defining vision for the future.
The professor also stressed on the inclusive strategy of “check and balance.”
Meanwhile, NSUS said Nagas have been standing their ground and weathering every storm that came their way “despite divisive political agenda and vexed socio-political issues”.
The union stated that the programme was organised, to inform, instil and preserve the spirit of the glorious legacy among the younger generation “lest they forget the invaluable sacrifices”.
“The observation of the Naga Plebiscite Day affords every Naga the opportunity to collectively renew commitment to creating an environment of collective aspiration”, NSUS added.
The programme was moderated by precursor general secretary, NSUS, Moranthyel Saka, Mao Christian Fellowship, Shillong, chaplain, Kayio Basena offered invocation while NSUS president delivered welcome address.
Later, NSUS assistant general secretary, Eli Chiziinai Esther proposed vote of thanks and Chakhesang Christian Fellowship, Shillong, chaplain, Keveseyi Vero offered the benediction.
