Opening burning of waste at landfill sites prohibited: KMC

Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) has reiterated that opening burning of waste, even during mass social work, at landfill sites was completely prohibited.
In a notification, KMC administrator T Lanusenla Longkumer warned that violators would be penalised and the sanitation vehicle of the particular ward, area, village and organisation to which the violator was attached would not be allowed to dispose waste at the KMC landfill. He pointed out that open burning of waste on lands, including at landfill sites, was completely prohibited under Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016 and the National Green Tribunal. He claimed that KMC was in the process of mitigating the KMC landfill (Dump Yard) of the existing deep seated fire which posed serious health risks to all citizens of Kohima and surrounding areas.
While disposal of waste had been shifted to an adjacent location in the same site, Longkumer noted that it had come to his notice that time and again manpower attached to sanitation vehicles of the wards, areas, villages and organisations were found to be setting fire to the new landfill.
