Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) kicked off the “Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS)” campaign at Etsutchukha Pump Site, Wokha, in concurrence with the state’s action plan of PHED with SDO (C) Wokha, Tsidi as distinguished guest on Friday.
According to a DIPR report, the SDO while administering the pledge, urged upon the people to stop using single-use plastics (SUPs) and to do their bit in keeping their land and water bodies free from litter. As part of the celebration, a massive cleanliness drive and tree plantation was carried out at the site followed by a pledge to stop littering and ban SUPs.
In the keynote address, PHED Wokha Division, EE, Er. Imnazulu stressed that trees were planted to improve air quality, conserve water, preserve soil and climate amelioration.
He stated that public participation was critical in banning SUPs and the success of banning plastic would be possible only through effective engagement and actions from all stakeholders. DIPR report informed that SHS campaign is celebrated from September 15-October 2 every year. This year’s SHS is focused on managing the legacy waste at garbage vulnerable sites at villages.
For Wokha district, which consists of six blocks and covers 153 villages, activities including visual cleanliness in villages, cleaning of garbage vulnerable sites in the villages, community awareness for segregation of waste (dry and wet) at source, construction of waste collection & segregation sheds/centres, door to door collection of non-biodegradable waste like plastics, etc., would be undertaken during the campaign.
