Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Wokha division observed “International Day of Zero Waste 2023” Thursday under the theme, “Achieving Sustainable and Environmentally Sound Practices of Minimizing and Managing Waste” with students and teachers of Government Middle School (G.M.S) Merapani Village sponsored by Sanitation and WSSO, PHED, Kohima.
A press release by PHED Wokha informed that in his speech, district coordinator, Chuba Longchar said that the “International Day of Zero Waste” was a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of reducing waste and promoting sustainable consumption and production practice.
He said waste was a growing problem that affect the environment, health and economy and that every year millions of tons of waste are generated worldwide polluting the oceans, contaminating the air and contributing to climate change.
Longchar urged the students to adopt a zero-waste life style which means refusing reducing, reusing and recycling as much as possible, by doing so he said it would conserve natural resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create a healthier and more sustainable environment not only for the present but also for future generations.
The programme was chaired by district chemist, Er. Aremo; dustbins for biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes were also distributed to the school; WQMS sign boards and wall paintings were also placed at strategic locations to commemorate the event.
