Correspondent

Authorities in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Thursday destroyed poppy plants to seven to 10 acre in the reserved forest area of the district.
Range forest officer, Kangpokpi forest division said that a combined team of the division and district police intercepted the poppy cultivation during a trek to check for encroachment and illegal poppy cultivation in the Kanglatongbi Kangpokpi Reserved Forest Hill today.
The team came across illegal poppy cultivation of 7-10 acres which were promptly destroyed.
The process for lodging FIR against the illegal activities and poppy cultivation were taken up, he added.
Kanglatongbi Kangpokpi Reserved Forest was notified as a reserved forest in July 1968. The divisional forest officer N Ganesh warned fringe villages of forest range that stern action will be taken up for those who indulged in poppy cultivation in reserved forest areas.
He also stated that an investigation will be initiated by the division in coordination with police and NAB to book the culprit(s) under both Indian Forest Act 1927 and Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
He lauded the forest staff for their vigil in the reserved forests while stressing the need for real time monitoring of the reserved forest based on satellite imagery every fortnight given the vast tracts of forest lands and poor forest staff strength.
The DFO reiterated that as per section 26 of Indian Forest Act, 1927, trespassing, making fresh clearings, breaking up of land for cultivation or other purposes inside a reserved forest are prohibited.
As such, any person who commits such illegal activities shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months, or with fine, or with both, in addition to such compensation for damage done to the forest as the convicting court may direct to pay.
He appealed to the public to refrain from trespassing and committing any offence inside the reserved forest and to come forward to help to identify those responsible for such heinous activities.
