Rains trigger traffic congestion, dampen Diwali festivities

Staff Reporter

With cyclone Sitrang’s formation developing in the Bay of Bengal, incessant rains continued to lash Dimapur and other parts of the State throughout the day dampening Diwali celebrations.
While the rains played a spoilsport to the celebrations, the State’s commercial hub witnessed massive traffic snarls on several roads across the town on Monday.
Though traffic congestion on the first working day of the week is a normal phenomenon, the untimely rains only compounded the problem further. Traffic personnel in their raincoats had a harrowing time managing traffic at major road intersections. Some narrow lanes witnessed two-three rows of vehicles bumper-to-bumper, which added more to the jam. In certain area, traffic crawled at a snail’s pace.
Meanwhile, the relentless downpour affected celebration of the festival of lights among the citizens.
Speaking to Nagaland Post, Lions Club Dimapur vice-president Basu Damani admitted that the untimely rain dampened the Diwali spirits. He however mentioned that some people celebrated the festival in their houses, inviting friends and relatives and enjoying food and sweets. He stated that they did not let the rains take away the enthusiasm of Diwali by lightning earthen lamps under roof and preparing bhog for the puja.
On the other hand, bursting of firecrackers was seen in many parts of the town, adding to the festive spirit that celebrated the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and truth over falsehood. It may be mentioned that rains in Nagaland and other North-eastern States, have been triggered by cyclone Sitrang over Bay of Bengal.
