Santosh Trophy: Haileuyibe’s goal helps Nagaland beat Tamil Nadu

Haileuyibe Iranggau’s lone goal helped Nagaland beat Tamil Nadu to register their second win of the 76th National Football Championship for Hero Santosh Trophy 2022-23 in Assam on Friday evening.
A second win and six points in Group III for Nagaland team after defeating Uttar Pradesh in the first match.
With the introduction of the game, Nagaland team broke the deadlock in the 5th minute through Haileuyibe Iranggau which was setup by Pursunep. The game gave Nagaland the much tempo into the match but their lacklustre finishing almost cost the match.
Nagaland goalkeeper Neithovilie Chalieu was kept busy making some crucial saves for the team and manage to keep a clean sheet for the second consecutive time. Tamil Nadu also had their fair chances to score but was not able to break through the Nagaland defensive line and find the net.
Clubbed in the Group III with Goa, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh. A tough match lies ahead of the Nagaland team as they take on the host team Assam on January 1, 6 pm. While their next two matches will be played against Goa and Arunachal Pradesh.
Nagaland goalkeeper Neithovilie Chalieu said the players are in high spirit and are confident this time to qualify for next round.
He urged the footballing community to keep praying and support them so that they can qualify for the zonal zone and represent Nagaland at the main event. “This is our best shot to qualify for the main tournament” he said.
Mention may be made that the tournament is held every year with eligible teams who are divided into zones, must play in the qualifying round and can progress into the main tournament.
The current champions are Kerala, who won their seventh title during the 2021–22 edition.
