Section 144 CrPC promulgated in Imphal East district

To maintain law and order, Imphal East district magistrate promulgated a prohibitory order under section 144 of CrPC in the entire district.
An order of the additional district magistrate of the district said that the prohibition came into effect from noon of December 7 and will be in place for two months.
The order prohibited assembly of five or more persons which is likely to turn unlawful and carrying of firearms, sticks, stones, weapons or objects of any description which can be used as offensive weapons.
Additional district magistrate Shamim Ahmad Shah promulgated the prohibitory order based on reports furnished by the SPs of Imphal East and Imphal West districts.
Some areas of Imphal East district, to mention here, are under police jurisdiction of Imphal West district police.
The SPs, in separate letters to the district administration, reported that they had information and apprehension of serious breach of peace, disturbances to public tranquility and danger to human lives and properties in the area due to unlawful activities of some anti-social elements.
The prohibitory order was promulgated in the backdrop of a recent violent agitation in a locality of Imphal East district bordering Imphal West district over the alleged destruction of idols of a temple at the locality.
Telepati area was rocked by violence on the night of December 5 after residents of the area agitated against the alleged destruction of idols of a temple at the locality.
Though timely intervention by police prevented escalation of the violence, Imphal East district administration has promulgated prohibition under section 2 of section 144 of CrPC in the area considering the tension between two groups of people in the area.
The prohibitory order will remain in the area for a month, the order had stated.
