Security upped ahead of Sangai festival

Ahead of Manipur Sangai festival, the police are on their toes to ensure peace and maintain law and order across the state.
The police have been conducting mopping operations at various places of the state, particularly in the vicinities of the festival venues and Imphal Airport as VVIPs and VIPs are expected to visit the state during the festival.
Sangai festival’s curtain-raiser event was held in Kolkata on October 23. This year, festival would be held at as many as 13 locations across the state.
President of India Droupadi Murmu is likely to attend the opening ceremony of the annual tourism festival at the main venue in Imphal’s Hapta Kangjeibung on November 21.
The 10-day festival, which is being held after two-year gap due to COVID-19 pandemic, would commence from November 21-30.
In an effort to maintain law and order during, the security has been beefed up by way of mopping operations at sensitive areas.
For the Imphal West district police, the operation is being concentrated in the vicinity of the Imphal Airport where VVIPs and VIPs will be arriving during the festival.
Continuing the operation, police commandos on Monday conducted a cordon and search operation at Ningombam, a locality in the vicinity of the airport.
The police raided as many as 75 houses in the locality and verified over 115 persons of the locality including two bailed out underground cadres.
No suspect was detained in the operation conducted in the morning, a police source said.
The operation was conducted to flush out anti-social elements and a part of security measures to maintain law and order in the district during the festival, the source said.
The Manipur Sangai festival is an annual tourism festival hosted by the state tourism department every year.
The main objective of hosting the festival is to promote Manipur as a world class tourism destination.
This year, the tourism department is preparing to organize events at as many as 13 places across the state.
After the curtain-raiser event in Kolkata, state chief minister N Biren Singh would release the official theme song of the festival at a simple function at his secretariat on November 8, 2022.
