Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) on Monday named Sematilla Colony as the best performing Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (RRR) centre. Police Colony and Lengrijan Colony were adjudged as second and third positions.
The winner received cash award of Rs. 70,000 while the second and third received Rs. 60,000 and Rs. 50,000 respectively. Certificates were also given out to all the 11 participating colonies.
The objective of the campaign was to establish RRR centres where citizens can contribute items like clothes, shoes, books, toys, newspapers and plastic excluding single-use plastic for reuse and recycling.
The campaign was launched by DMC under the theme ‘Meri Life Mera Swachh Shehar’ as per the initiative of Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 (U) of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
Speaking at the award distribution programme held at DDSC Stadium, DC Dimapur, Sachin Jaiswal spoke on the importance of community participation by citing example of Mokokchung district, where denizens keep the town clean. But in case of Dimapur, the face of Nagaland, the situation and reality was not that appealing, he said.
In this regard, he encouraged the general public to take the ownership and take the responsibility to segregate the waste and minimize plastic waste.
Short speech was delivered by DMC administrator, W Manpai Phom, where he spoke about the RRR campaign.
He congratulated the winners and the participating colonies, and informed that with the first round of RRR campaign, most of the collected items have been distributed to the needy.
Objective and concept of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle was shared by waste management Dimapur Municipal Council, consultant Adrian Mahung.
It may be noted that at the first phase, books amounting to 986 kgs were collected and 3686 kgs of reusable clothes were collected. The programme was chaired by Lensanaro and invocation by Nagaland Baptist pastors union president pastor, Imnatoshi Longkumer.
