State JD(U) unit concerned over BJP’s decision to implement UCC

State JD(U) unit on Sunday expressed serious concern about the decision of BJP to implement Uniform Civil Code (UCC) once it returns to power in Gujarat.
“The JDU, being solemnly secular party, is extremely troubled to know that the BJP has decided to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Gujarat once it comes to power again,” the party said. This development would be the beginning of UCC being implemented across the country, it said.
Pointing out that UCC was the most dangerous threat to the democratic Constitution of India, JD(U) said the decision to implement UCC also meant that the BJP has totally surrendered to the dictate of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, and was no more a political party but a religious organisation.
JD(U), therefore, said that the Nagas should be the most worried of such move, as Nagas, since time immemorial, had lived a life of democracy deeply rooted in the village republic, free from any external interferences. As such, JD(U) said to live under a UCC conditioned by a dominant religious ethics of the majority would subjugate the Nagas’ age-old cultures and traditions.
“Moreover, over the years, the Nagas having embraced Christianity overwhelmingly and this is also a very important factor when it comes to UCC,” it said. Therefore, JD(U) called upon the Nagas “to wake up and defend itself so that our history and identity is protected from any external religiously riddled aggression.”
