Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR) Hospital in association with North East Chapter of the Association of Surgeons of India (NECASI) and Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India (AMASI) organised the first Laparoscopic Surgery workshop in the state here at CIHSR 4th Mile, Saturday.
The workshop has been initiated by nationally renowned surgeons from AMASI for surgeons who have been inactive over a period of time because of the global pandemic and primarily to help them continue improving their skills. The workshop also presents as an opportunity for the young surgeons to interact and learn from the senior surgeons and experts.
In the Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme, members of NECASI and visiting faculty of AMASI delivered the introductory and welcome addresses followed by CME/ video sessions and valedictory function.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Soni Lyndoh, who is also a member of NECASI, gave an introduction on NECASI and its inception. Dr. Soni stated that the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) was established in the year 1938 and that the north east chapter was the youngest chapter in India gaining recognition only four years ago. Dr. Soni also highlighted about how three states (Assam, Manipur, and Tripura) among the eight north-eastern states were already recognized state chapters. And therefore, addressing the need for the remaining five NE states to be also recognized state chapters, the NECASI was formed he said.
Dr. Soni concluded his address by urging all surgeons in the state to enroll with the ASI and be a part of the regional chapter as well.
Meanwhile, chairperson, NECASI, Dr. Saia Chenkual in his address also spoke on ASI, its inception, and stressed on how the ASI was established to realise a long-standing wish among the Indian surgeons to get together for the sole purpose of each other’s experiences and enhancing their surgical skills. He informed that the 4th annual conference for NECASI or the “NECASICON 2022” would be held in the month of November at Gangtok, Sikkim.
This was followed by an address by visiting faculty from AMASI, Dr. Jugindra Sorokhaibam. Dr. Jugindra laid emphasis on the word “associate” and why we should associate. Focusing at the system of education in the country, and the process of imparting the idea of competition from a very early age, Dr. Jugindra stated that we have now become so instinctively competitive as it were a “rat-race” that we have left out on ‘association’. He then presented a case study from Harvard University and cited it as an example to co-relate it with his explanation of ‘association’.
The day-long workshop comprised of two programmes; Workshop programme and Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme. The first half of the workshop included inauguration of programme and carrying out of live surgeries.
Earlier during the day, five doctors– Dr. Elbert Khiangte, Dr. Jugindra Sorokhaibam, Dr. Manoj Choudhury and Dr. Sameer Rege performed free surgeries on around eight patients.
Director CIHSR Dr. Sedevi Angami and organizing secretary for the workshop, Dr. Temsula Alinger also address the gathering.
