Students of a college in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Wednesday held a protest refuting militants’ allegation that their colleague shot dead by two miscreants a few days ago was a drug peddler. Seventeen-year-old student Seigunlal Misao was shot dead allegedly by two motorcycle-borne unidentified gunmen in front of the Motbung PHC located on the side of NH-2 (Imphal Dimapur road) on Saturday (March 26) night.
Even as a joint action committee (JAC) was formed in connection with the killing of the student pressing the state government to book the culprits and justice, National Revolutionary Front Manipur (NRFM), a militant group accused the deceased student to be a ‘drug peddler’ while taking responsibility for the murder.
Earlier, the JAC had refuted the allegation hurled by a militant group on the deceased student.
Infuriated by the baseless allegation, the JAC decided not to accept the dead body of the student which is currently at the RIMS morgue while making an u-turn to its earlier decision to accept the body after a meeting with chief minister N Biren Singh, and perform his last rites.
The JAC had agreed to claim the dead body after the chief minister assured an ex-gratia of Rs five lakh and conducted necessary inquiries into the case. He further assured to consider providing a job to the eligible next of the kin of the deceased.
Following the agreement, the JAC planned to take back the dead body. However, it was stalled infuriated by the allegation hurled by the NRFM.
Today, students of Damdei Christian College where the deceased studied held a protest outside their college campus demanding justice for their colleague.
The students chanted various slogans demanding immediate booking of the culprits and punishing them as per law during the protest.
The students also refuted an allegation hurled by a militant group that the deceased student was a drug peddler.
