Super Cup: New Market thrash Crimsoune 10-1

A dominant New Market FC opened their campaign with a thumping 10-1 win over Crimsoune Club in the Kohima Super Cup played at Indira Gandhi Stadium, here on Monday.
In a one-sided match, six players from New Market FC took their turns to score the goals. Nyithong Magh scored the first hat-trick of the championship by netting in the 71st, 72nd and 75th minutes.
Limakumzuk Ao and Rhitso Mero each scored a goal while Selhouvi Belho scored the face saver goal for Crimsoune Club in the first session.
After the break, Limakumzuk Ao scored again while his teammates Visalie Mezhü and Haotingmang each scored to bring the game to a disappointing closure for Crimsoune Club. Crimsoune Club did their best with several attempts but they turned out to be the underdog against one of the cup favourites. The match ended without any cautionary cards which displayed a good trend of sportsmanship.
New Market FC will now join the other seven teams and vie for a slot in the group of 8 to progress to the league round.
The knockout round will continue on Tuesday with A-Yhome FC taking on United Brothers FC at 11:30 a.m. while Barak FC will take on Wolves XI FC in the second match of the day at 1:30 p.m.
Earlier, the inaugural function was graced by Sr Superintendent of Police, Kevithuto Sophie as special guest. In his brief remarked, Sophie observed the need to do away with the lackadaisical approach where players only practice during the game.
He encouraged the youth to take the game seriously if they envision to take it forward. Sophie also underscored the need for players to get exposure as that was one way for them to get into the bigger leagues.
Taking the scope of football into account, he said the game had the potential to nurture unity and friendship among the Naga tribes which, he added, could be exploited and used a means to patch up the differences that had fractured the Naga society.
He also urged the gathered youths to take up other sources to earn one’s livelihood such as farming and rearing livestock even as they pursue a career as a sportsperson.
Earlier, the inaugural was compered by Medolenuo Loucü while Central Christian Revival Church, pastor, Mhasiselie Theünuo invoked God’s blessing.
Convenor of the cup, Zedikuolie Kire delivered the welcome address and KTC president, Dr Viketoulie Pienyü delivered the president’s address.
A special number was presented by Viriezhünuo Solo.
