Taxi drivers assaulted in Shillong; five arrested from Ghy

Shops and other business establishments downed shutters from late afternoon in some of the busy commercial areas here in Meghalaya after two local taxi drivers were assaulted by miscreants last night.
Police said two local taxi drivers Iohborlang Kharsohnoh and Bashai Syiem suffered injuries after being assaulted by miscreants at Khyndailad at 10: 20 pm on Thursday. They were rushed to the Shillong Civil Hospital for medical treatment.
On Friday morning, the Taxi Drivers’ Association of Khyndailad did not allow local taxis to ply from Khyndailad. Security personnel were deployed in Khyndailad to prevent any untoward incident with upset local taxi drivers urging those plying in the area to stop. The members from the association also gave a 24-hour deadline to the state police to arrest the culprits who assaulted the taxi driver.
To bring the situation under control, the East Khasi Hills district administration along with police met the members from the association and assured that justice would be done.
Due to the tense situation the shops and other business establishments downed shutters and by evening the roads wore a deserted look with people rushing indoors.
Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills district, Sylvester Nongtnger informed that a case has been filed and in due course of its investigation five persons have been nabbed in connection with the assault.
He said the “special cell East Khasi Hills along with the help of Guwahati city Police nabbed five persons at Guwahati.”
Further investigation into the case is on.
Meanwhile, till the filing of this report no untoward incident was reported, but the security scenario in the state capital has once again some under stress.
