Teachers, officers trained on ToFEI guidelines in Mon

One day training for teachers and officers from police and education department on the implementation of Tobacco Free Educational Institutions (ToFEI) guidelines was organised by District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC) Mon on November 15 at District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) Conference Hall Mon.
A press release by DTCC Mon informed that at the programme,
jr. dental specialist, District Hospital Mon, Dr. Amenla highlighted on the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and stressed on the passive and third hand smoking. She also highlighted on the effects of betel nuts and added that use of betel nuts increases the risk of cancer especially mouth cancer.
DTCC Mon district consultant, E. Nyeamying Konyak briefed the participants about the guidelines of ToFEI and emphasized on the role of the school management and authorities for the effective implementation of ToFEI guidelines. She also highlighted on the provisions of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003 in relation to educational institution and its penalties. Introducing Tobacco Free App to the participants, Konyak said through this app the educational institution may use a self-evaluation scorecard to declare the school tobacco free and can also report a violation of COTPA 2003.
In a concluding remark, AEO, DEO Office Mon Bejem encouraged the participants to share their learnings from today’s training to others at their respective schools. She also urged the school management to ensure that no shops should sell tobacco products near 100 yards of educational institution. The programme was chaired by District Hospital Mon, councillor, Kenie Thong.
