Three rebels held in Manipur


Amid the beefing up of security in connection with 10-day tourism festival, security forces in Manipur arrested three active cadres of two different armed outfits, officials said on Sunday.
In a follow up operation to the arrest of one of the cadres belonging to United Tribal Liberation Army (UTLA), a combined team of Jiribam district police and 39 Assam Rifles arrested an active cadre of UTLA (Saipu Singson faction) during an operation at Chandrapur Oil Pump under Jiri police station on Saturday evening, around 4.45 pm.
The arrested cadre was identified as Lunminthang Singson alias Thangboi alias Mimin (39), a resident of Phaitol village under Tousem sub-division of Tamenglong district.
During a raid to his house based on his disclosure, the combined team recovered one AK Rifle with magazine loaded with 22 live rounds and one .32 pistol with a magazine loaded with nine live rounds.
The arrested person along with the seized items was handed over to Jiri police station for further investigation, the police source added.
In another counter insurgency operation, a combined team of state police commandos and 4th Assam Rifles nabbed two active cadres of Manipur Naga People Front (MNPF) from Andro area of Imphal East district on Sunday.
The nabbed cadres were identified as Abner Jajo (35) of Khuntak village of Kamjong district and Mashungkhui Jajo (26) of Sotung( Somthar) village of the same district.
The police claimed that Abner Jajo is a self-styled corporal of the outfit who got basic training in Myanmar under army number 151. Mashungkhui Jajo is the self-styled lieutenant of the outfit. His received basic military training from a training camp of the outfit in Myanmar under army number 130, the source said.
They were nabbed during an operation near Santhei Natural Park’s Gate under Andro police station of Imphal East district today around 12.15 pm, the source said.
The operation was launched based on specific information received from 4th AR regarding presence of suspected cadres of the outfit in the area.
Acting on the information, the combined team rushed to the area and conducted frisking and checking. They intercepted the two cadres who came on foot, the source said.
The arrested active cadres were handed over to Andro police station for further necessary legal action against them, the source said.
The arrest of the three active cadres of the two armed groups comes amid tightened security measures taken up across the state ahead of the 10-day Manipur Sangai Festival due to begin from Monday.
The police and security forces have tightened up security across the state, particularly venues of the tourism festival, to ensure peace and maintain law and order.
They have been conducting mopping operations at various places of the state, particularly in the vicinities of the festival venues and Imphal Airport as VVIPs and VIPs are expected to visit the state during the festival.
The festival would be held at as many as 13 locations across the state with the inaugural function at Sangai Ethnic Park in Bishnupur district.
Union minister of culture, tourism and DoNER Kishan Reddy is scheduled to attend the inaugural function of the festival
