Unlike in the past when it used to be customary to downplay terrorist killings by Islamic organisations against Israel, this time the world’s free democracies have adopted a clear stand by condemning HAMAS as a terrorist organisation and expressing solidarity with Israel for the barbaric act committed on civilian women and children on October 7. Furthermore, many countries have made it clear that while they stand for the rights of Palestinians they consider HAMAS as a terrorist outfit which is committing heinous crimes under the pretext of fighting for the rights of Palestinians. This time the principal western power- US, UK, France, Germany, Italy and Canada, Norway, Austria- have unequivocally made it clear that they stand with Israel and they will not be found wanting when it comes to defending the legitimate rights of Israel to exist as a nation. India, under prime minister Narendra Modi has taken a clear stand against HAMAS for the committing the most horrendous acts against civilians on October 27. At the same time, India reaffirmed that it supports the rights of the Palestinians as a nation but condemned terrorist acts by HAMAS. Even before HAMAS swept to power in Gaza in 2007, it openly sought the “obliteration” of Israel as a matter of policy. Gaza, a narrow strip of land roughly twice the size of Washington D.C., has been sealed off since 2005 by both Israel and Egypt over fears of an attack, though smuggling tunnels have long left it notoriously porous. Many analysts and officials see Iranian fingerprints on Hamas’ brutal assault, and they point to a flurry in diplomacy between Israel and some of its Muslim Arab neighbours- and Iran’s self-interest in disrupting it- as a likely motive. Iran is the main force behind Islamic terror organisations such as HAMAS, Hezbollah and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Iran is a terror sponsor and was so designated in 1984 and continues to actively arm and fund terror groups in Gaza, Iraq, Syria, Bahrain and across the Middle East. From 2000 to 2004, Hamas was responsible for killing nearly 400 Israelis and wounding more than 2,000 in 425 attacks, according to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 2001 through May 2008, Hamas launched more than 3,000 Qassam rockets and 2,500 mortar attacks into Israel On October 7, the Jewish Sabbath, HAMAS carried out a bold and well planned terror attack on Israel killing several hundreds, butchering infants in their cribs, raping women and taking some 200 as hostages. These are worst than acts of terror which HAMAS is indulging in the name of fighting for Palestinians. More countries are seeing outfits like HAMAS, Hezbollah, ISIL as nothing but blood thirsty and rapacious thugs even perpetrating such acts on their own people be it in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon etc. Fortunately more countries today are rejecting terrorist groups as liberators. Turkey, an important NATO alliance has backed HAMAS and placed itself against NATO. For liberals in the UN the only way to avoid a global war is if Israel agrees to the UN by backing down and only to get obliterated. That is not going to happen and so, the Gaza war started by HAMAS will end only when hydra-headed terror monsters like HAMAS, Hezbollah, ISIS and regimes backing them, are eliminated so that peace is ensured in the region as well as the world.
