Two groups clash at tribal cultural event in Imphal; 7 cops injured

Seven policemen, including a sub-inspector, were among several people injured in a clash between two groups at a cultural programme venue in Imphal on Monday night.
Sticks, stones and brick chunks were used in the clash that erupted between the two groups outside the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex that escalated to nearby Namdulong locality of Imphal.
Some houses and several vehicles, mostly cars, were damaged in the clash at Namdulong locality, reports said.
Later, police detained as many as 20 youths allegedly involved in the clash. They also fired tear-shells and mock bombs to calm the situation.
The injured policemen including the SI were taken to Raj Medicity hospital in Imphal’s North AOC where three of them including the SI who sustained severely were admitted in the wards.
The SI was reportedly manhandled by a group of people as he was caught in the midst of the clash.
Sources said that members of the hosting body confronted some visitors outside the venue and it escalated when the members chased after the visitors that ran away and entered Namdulong locality.
The clash then broke out as residents of Namdulong retaliated against members of the organizers. Some sources alleged that guns were also fired amid the clash.
Teams of police who rushed to the spot and in a bid to calm the situation, resorted to baton-charge besides using tear gas shells and mock bombs.
Meanwhile, with tension running high, leaders of Tangkhul Katamnao Long, Imphal along with various tribal based bodies, including All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur convened a meeting with the Namdulong village authority today to ease the situation.
