Correspondent

Incessant rains caused extensive damage to the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Awasiya Vidyalaya (NSCBAV) residential hostel for the underprivileged children here at Vungotchu Colony, Wokha town in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Samagra Shiksha Wokha assistant District Coordinator (ADC) K. Chandemo Patton, who visited the damaged hostel along with colleagues, told Nagaland Post that damage to the hostel was caused due to the collapse of the retaining wall above it. They also distributed immediate relief for the students and staff in the form of first aid kits and food items.

Warden of the hostel Y. Yireni Tungoe told Nagaland Post that collapse of the retaining wall and subsequent damage of the hostel occurred around 3 a.m. in the morning. She also informed that students and staff had a rude awakening in the wee hours of the morning but that they have been able to at least clear most of the mud and water that had seeped in to the hostel by around Saturday afternoon. The warden’s car (Maruti Swift bearing registration number NL07CA0178) was also damaged beyond repair by the retaining wall collapse.

Fortunately, none of the 35 student occupants of the hostel from different government schools and the hostel staff of 7 suffered any injury in the incident.

Inaugurated on January 19, 2022, the NSCBAV residential hostel for the underprivileged children with an intake capacity of 50 is run by Samagra Shiksha, department of School Education, government of Nagaland.
