Zeliang calls for improvising VCs

UDA chairman, TR Zeliang emphasised on the need to protect and uphold the unique customary laws and traditions of the Nagas and called upon the people to improvise the power and function of Village Councils (VCs) by creating village council rules and regulation based on customary practices.
The former chief minister said this while inaugurating the council hall of New Jalukie Village constructed under LADF iconic project scheme at New Jalukie on Tuesday.
Zeliang said VCs play an important role in upholding the customary laws and practices which the Constitution of India empowers the Naga people under Article 371 (A).
“In our village democratic set-up, Village Council is the final authority and no other authority can interfere in our customary functioning system,” he said.
He said cases like theft, murder and divorce can be solved through customary laws, and that litigation would not be necessary “if there was an established customary law in place.”
Considering the necessity of such a facility at the village level, Zeliang said village council halls were constructed in every village under 7 A/C under various schemes.
He said there were only few village council halls and village gates in Peren district till 2008, but at present almost all villages under 7 Peren Assembly Constituency have village council halls.
He also expressed contentment on the timely completion of the project and congratulated the villagers for utilising the sanctioned fund judiciously.
Referring New Jalukie as a “Mini Township”, Zeliang said that the village was selected for the iconic project due to its fast-growing habitation and the potential to be at par even with small towns.
The inauguration programme was moderated by Aphun Gonmei and Keyipeule, president and Education & Statistics Secretary of New Jalukie Students Union (NJSU) respectively.
Earlier, chairman of New Jalukie Pastor Union, TR Khamsinlung invoked God’s blessing while welcome speech was delivered by chairman of New Jalukie Village, Liangkebo.
At the program, pastor ERBC, Rev. Namrong led the act of blessing ceremony and vote of thanks and benediction by GB & ex. Chairman of New Jalukie Village, Khiulinbo and secretary of Pastor Union, New Jalukie Village respectively.
The programme also witnessed a cultural dance by Women Society of New Jalukie Village while an upcoming Artist from Zeliang Music Association (ZMA), Isile Hegeu enthralled the gathering with her melodious song.
