Deputy chief minister, TR Zeliang held a meeting with the managing director (MD) of National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) Mahmood Ahmed and ED (P) RO Kohima on September 30, 2023.
Since setting up of NHIDCL in 2014, many state highways in Nagaland were handed over to the corporation and, at present, there were 13 national highways under its jurisdiction. However, none of the major roads could be completed thus far. Hence, the deputy chief minister impressed upon the MD to expedite completion of some important projects by the end of this year.
As the Nagaland portion of the four-lane Dimapur bypass road was completed, but some portion in Assam remained incomplete, the MD agreed in principle to complete by December 2023.
This would immensely ease traffic congestion within Dimapur and would also be convenient for heavy goods carriers and transporters heading toward Manipur and Myanmar.
With the completion of Dimapur bypass, the Dimapur-Kohima four-lane road and the Kohima bypass, connectivity to Manipur- Myanmar would be complete, which would then be a corridor for the whole country towards Southeast Asian countries.
However, as the Kohima-Mao road was a bottleneck to achieving this dream, the meeting deliberated at length and agreed to jointly work out a mechanism to resolve such issues at the earliest. This was stated in a press release by the media cell of deputy chief minister’s office.
