South Africa sealed a dominant 4-1 victory in the Women’s T20I series after defeating India by 23 runs in the final match, thanks to skipper Laura Wolvaardt’s sublime unbeaten 92. India, chasing a modest 156, faltered once again with the bat and were restricted to 132 for eight, exposing their inconsistency ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Opting to bat, South Africa were powered by Wolvaardt’s elegant strokeplay. She struck 11 fours and two sixes in her 56-ball innings, carrying her bat despite wickets tumbling around her. Her late flourish, including two sixes off the final two balls, lifted South Africa past 150 after a slowdown in the middle overs. Earlier, India’s bowlers had staged a fightback, with Shree Charani (2/22), Deepti Sharma (2/37), and Renuka Singh (2/21) striking crucial blows. Charani removed Sune Luus and Tazmin Brits in successive overs, while Renuka picked up two wickets at the death. Yet Wolvaardt’s composure ensured South Africa finished strongly at 155 for six.
India’s chase began poorly, losing Shafali Verma (4) and Jemimah Rodrigues (1) within the first four overs. Shafali’s sweep off Eliz-Mari Marx was caught at fine leg by Chloe Tryon, while Rodrigues mistimed a pull off Ayabonga Khaka, with Tryon again impressing in the field. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and opener Anushka Sharma attempted to rebuild cautiously, but their 17-run stand consumed 24 balls, adding pressure. Anushka fell to Nadine de Klerk’s slower ball, leaving India at 38 for three.
Bharti Fulmali provided resistance with a counter-attacking 40 off 30 balls, striking four boundaries and two sixes. However, Harmanpreet struggled to accelerate, scoring 22 off 28 before being dismissed by Nonkululeko Mlaba, who bowled a disciplined spell of 2/15. Fulmali’s dismissal in the 16th over effectively ended India’s hopes, as the required rate soared beyond reach.
South Africa’s bowlers maintained discipline throughout, with Mlaba and de Klerk leading the attack. Their consistent breakthroughs ensured India never recovered from the early collapse. Despite flashes of aggression from Fulmali, India’s middle-order stagnation and lack of partnerships proved decisive.
The defeat highlighted India’s recurring batting woes, with frequent changes in the playing XI and lack of consistency undermining their campaign. For South Africa, Wolvaardt’s commanding form—two fifties and a century in the series—was the cornerstone of their success. Her ability to anchor and finish innings showcased her leadership and batting prowess.
India, crowned WODI champions earlier this year, now face a reality check ahead of the T20 World Cup in two months. Their inability to chase modest totals and reliance on sporadic individual performances remain pressing concerns. South Africa, meanwhile, head into the global tournament with confidence, having dominated a strong Indian side.
