NEW DELHI, AUG 29 (PTI): I ndia recorded an almost 80 per cent decline in malaria cases and deaths between 2015 and 2025, while high-burden districts fell from 155 to 33, the Union Health Ministry said Saturday. As many as 160 districts reported zero indigenous malaria cases during 2022-2025, indicating sustained interruption of local transmission.
The ministry reviewed malaria control measures in 33 high-burden districts across nine states and UTs, which accounted for 64 per cent of cases and 54 per cent of deaths in 2025. Additional Secretary Aradhana Patnaik urged sustained vigilance and area-specific strategies to achieve the 2030 malaria elimination target.
States were directed to implement District and Village Action Plans, strengthen the “Test, Treat and Track” strategy, intensify surveillance and ensure uninterrupted diagnostic services and anti-malarial drugs, particularly in remote areas.
The meeting also stressed accurate data reporting and inter-sectoral coordination to address water-logging, mosquito breeding and environmental factors driving transmission.
