DIMAPUR, JUN 2 (NPN): India reaffirmed its dominance in South Asian basketball with commanding victories in both the Boys’ and Girls’ categories at the FIBA U18 Asia Cup 2026 – SABA Qualifiers, held in Colombo this past weekend.
The India U18 Girls Team stormed through the competition, defeating Sri Lanka and Maldives in the group phase before clinching the title with an emphatic 83-57 win over Sri Lanka. With this triumph, India secured its place in the FIBA U18 Women’s Asia Cup 2026 – Division B, scheduled in Bangkok from July 13–19.
Meanwhile, the India U18 Boys Team overcame Sri Lanka 78-56 in the final, ensuring top Sub-Zone ranking. As hosts of the upcoming FIBA U18 Asia Cup 2026 in Ahmedabad (Aug 13–23), India had already qualified, paving the way for Sri Lanka to join the continental event. Maldives claimed third place with a narrow 62-59 win over Bangladesh.
The Indian basketball contingent was led by Honorary Secretary of the Nagaland Basketball Association, Sentiningsang Longkumer, who served as head of delegation and also manager of the Girls’ team. His presence at the helm marked a subtle yet significant milestone for Nagaland sports administration, reflecting the region’s growing contribution to India’s national and international basketball journey.
While the spotlight shone on India’s athletes, Longkumer’s role as a leader and manager underscores the expanding pathways for Nagaland to be represented on the global stage. This achievement is seen as a stepping stone for the state’s sporting aspirations, inspiring young athletes and administrators alike to dream bigger.
With India preparing to host the FIBA U18 Asia Cup 2026 after more than two decades, the victories in Colombo set the tone for a historic summer of basketball. For Nagaland, the moment resonates as a proud chapter in its sporting narrative — one that promises greater visibility and opportunities in the years to come.
