India’s Navy Chief Heads to Myanmar to Strengthen Naval Defense

Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi is on a four‑day official visit to Myanmar from May 2 to May 5, aimed at deepening bilateral maritime cooperation and defence ties. During the visit, he will hold discussions with senior Myanmar leaders including General Ye Win Oo, Commander‑in‑Chief of the Armed Forces, Defence Minister General U Htun Aung, and Admiral Htein Win, Commander‑in‑Chief of the Myanmar Navy. His itinerary includes engagements at key naval establishments such as the Central Naval Command, Naval Training Command, and No. 1 Fleet, as well as a wreath‑laying ceremony at the Fallen Heroes’ War Memorial. The visit will focus on reviewing ongoing cooperation, enhancing operational linkages, and exploring new avenues in maritime security, capacity building, and training.

India and Myanmar maintain regular naval interactions through Defence Cooperation Meetings, Staff Talks, training exchanges, and exercises such as IMNEX and IMCOR. Myanmar has also participated in Indian initiatives including the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium, MILAN, International Fleet Review, Goa Maritime Conclave, IOS SAGAR, and the Admiral’s Cup. The Indian Navy described the visit as reaffirming India’s commitment to strengthening maritime partnerships in the Indian Ocean Region, with emphasis on bolstering security, enhancing naval cooperation, and promoting regional stability. The trip underscores the longstanding India‑Myanmar relationship, anchored in mutual trust and shared responsibility for maritime security.
