Joint director and state nodal officer NTCP, Dr. C. Tetseo declared Indisen as a tobacco free village on July 23 at the panchayat hall, Indisen village.
A press release by NTCP stated that, Dr C Tetseo in his short address, congratulated the village on becoming a tobacco free village and that there cannot be a better time than now as every single action of tobacco use can make people vulnerable getting coronavirus or spreading it. He also stated that every individual and community should do what they can to contain the surging pandemic and a village becoming tobacco free was an important step.
According to him tobacco free village will bring about short term benefits such as protecting the children from addiction, reducing transmission of virus during pandemic, reducing expenditure on tobacco products, and village becoming cleaner. For long term benefits such as reducing the burden of tobacco related diseases and tobacco related health cost, he made an appeal to other villages also to come forward and make their community safer and healthier.
During the function tobacco free village certificate was handed over to chairman of Village Council Indisen, Tongti Jamir. The tobacco free village campaign was initiated by youth organisation of the village and supported by village council and the church.
