DIMAPUR: Institutions across Nagaland joined the rest of the nation in celebrating the 80th Independence Day on Saturday with patriotic fervour, solemnity and collective participation.
At Nagaland University headquarters, Lumami, the celebration began with the hoisting of the National Flag at Rajiv Gandhi Park, followed by an address from chief guest Prof. Jagadish K. Patnaik, Vice-Chancellor. Prof. Patnaik reflected on the meaning of independence, stressing that it is not merely freedom but the opportunity for all to access resources and contribute to economic development. He highlighted India’s achievements in technology and space exploration, while emphasizing the need to bridge the rural-urban divide to achieve the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. He encouraged support for Gen Z entrepreneurs and researchers in fields such as AI, IoT, semiconductors, aerospace technology and advanced robotics.
The programme continued at I. Ihoshe Kinimi Hall, chaired by Dr. Lobeno Mozhui, with Padma Shri awardee Guru Sangyusang S. Pongener as guest of honour. Registrar Dr. Abemo paid tribute to freedom fighters, urging youth to fight against casteism and communalism. Guest of honour Guru Sangyusang emphasized the importance of preserving oral traditions and indigenous identity, dedicating his Padma Shri recognition to elders and communities who safeguarded cultural heritage. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Ambrish Singh, HoD Chemistry, followed by the National Anthem.
At Sainik School Punglwa, principal Col (Dr) Smita Misra unfurled the national tricolour, accompanied by cadets Ajano Z. Tungoe, Arju, Aryan Sinku and Shanchothung Ngullie. Cadets Vachan Kanth and K. Tanveesh delivered speeches in English and Hindi, urging commitment to Viksit Bharat 2047. The principal paid homage to freedom fighters and soldiers, highlighting constitutional values and appreciating the resilience of cadets and staff. The programme concluded with a rendition of “Vande Mataram.”
At Veterinary College Jalukie, faculty, staff and students celebrated the day with flag hoisting, cultural performances and patriotic activities. The programme commemorated the sacrifices of freedom fighters and reaffirmed values of unity, democracy and national integrity. Special emphasis was laid on youth participation, innovation and nation-building, with citizens renewing their commitment to contribute towards a stronger and self-reliant India.
At Niuland Parade Ground, the 155 Battalion CRPF participated in the Independence Day parade with enthusiasm and patriotic spirit. The contingent saluted the National Flag, showcasing discipline and ceremonial pride. Dr. Satyaveer Singh Verma, Commandant, 155 Bn CRPF, along with senior civil administration officials, graced the occasion.
In Dimapur, Vivekananda Welfare Foundation (VWF), in collaboration with the Lions Club of Dimapur Blue Venda, celebrated Independence Day with the children of Pratibha, its flagship educational initiative for underprivileged and school-dropout children. Organised under the Lions Club’s motto “Serve the Future” and initiative “Ek Kaushish- Nurturing Future & Inspiring Freedom,” the programme reflected the spirit of freedom while investing in education and dignity.
The event, led by Dr. Neena Dutta, District Governor, Lions District 322D, and supported by Falguni Sharma, president; Asha Agarwal, chairperson; and Priya Bhattacharjee, secretary, included donation of educational stationery and food packets. Children presented patriotic dances, songs and speeches, while Sujan Dey performed patriotic songs. Volunteers shared the journey of Pratibha, which began in 2019 to support disadvantaged children.
Interacting with the children, Dr. Dutta emphasized the importance of education and responsibility, while Falguni Sharma and Priya Bhattacharjee lauded collective efforts in creating opportunities for deprived children. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Niranjan Saha, founder & director of VWF. More than 80 children, 20 volunteers and 20 guests participated in the celebration, which, though simple in setting, was grand in spirit-celebrating independence, hope, education and compassion.
At Chatteswary Durga Bari Club, Dimapur, EDUCEN Nagaland organised a programme to honour the sacrifices of freedom fighters and inspire the younger generation towards nation-building. Over 40 participants, including students, members of EDUCEN, office bearers of the Chatteswary Durga Puja Committee and local residents, attended the event.
The highlight was the flag hoisting ceremony, jointly performed by the presidents of EDUCEN and the Durga Puja Committee along with children from the locality. Rohit Chakraborty, Education Secretary of EDUCEN, addressed the gathering.
Meanwhile, at NEISSR Peace Centre, Chümoukedima, the institute celebrated Independence Day under the theme “Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat @2047” (Youth Power for a Developed India).
In his message, Dr. Fr. C.P. Anto, principal, reflected on the deeper meaning of freedom, stating that independence should not be understood merely as freedom from colonial rule but also as freedom for peace, justice, human dignity, service and the common good. He urged youth to become mediators in conflict, bridges in division and advocates for inclusion.
Highlighting the identity of the Northeast, he stressed the importance of preserving indigenous cultures, languages and traditions while embracing modern education, science and technology.
Assistant Professor Daislinung Sebastian Kamsuan delivered the address on Youth Power for a Developed India, emphasising that youth power is not merely about numbers but about purpose, responsibility and action.
The programme began with the hoisting of the National Flag and singing of the National Anthem, led by Alungsangla K. Yimchunger.
At International University, Nagaland (IUN), registrar Dr. Roopam Bachhil hoisted the National Flag, followed by the National Anthem. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Bachhil highlighted the significance of freedom and the responsibility of educational institutions and students in contributing to nation-building through knowledge, integrity and responsible citizenship.
Prof. (Dr.) Zavise Rume, director (Vocational Studies), also delivered an Independence Day message, recalling the sacrifices of freedom fighters and encouraging the younger generation to uphold the values of unity, discipline and patriotism. The celebration concluded with the IUN community reaffirming its commitment to the progress and development of the nation.
At Ram Janaki Higher Secondary School, the celebration began with the hoisting of the National Tricolour by the principal, accompanied by the singing of the National Anthem. The programme was observed under the dual theme “Yuva Shakti for Viksit Bharat @2047” (Youth Power for a Developed India) and “150 Years of Vande Mataram.”
The event featured a disciplined parade, soulful patriotic songs, speeches, dances and cultural presentations by students, all coordinated by the school authority, teaching staff and students. The programme concluded on an inspiring note, leaving attendees with a renewed sense of patriotism, unity and dedication towards the nation’s future development.
