DIMAPUR: A series of academic, scientific and literary programmes were organised across institutions in Nagaland during the week, showcasing student talent, creativity and innovation while promoting awareness on science, literature and communication.
At Nagaland University, Kohima Campus, the Department of Biotechnology, School of Engineering and Technology (SET), in collaboration with the Microbiologists Society, India, Nagaland Chapter, celebrated International Microorganism Day 2026 on September 17 under the theme “Tiny Organisms, Big Impact: Microbes for a Sustainable Future.” The programme highlighted the indispensable role of microorganisms in health, agriculture, food production, biotechnology and environmental sustainability. Prof. Sujata Dash, Dean, SET, graced the inaugural as chief guest, while Prof. Pranav Kumar Prabhakar, Head of Biotechnology and State President of the Microbiologists Society, served as Convener. Six competitions-Quiz, Poster Making, Rangoli, Model Making, Reel Making and Microbial Art-were held with participation from 12 institutions, including two international, and 33 entries from Nagaland University.
Baptist College observed its Literary Day 2026 at Nousi Ki, Mission Compound, with Prof. Buno Liegise, Department of Education, Nagaland University, delivering the keynote. She stressed knowledge competence, writing skills and a growth mindset as keys to thriving, while cautioning against over dependence on Artificial Intelligence. The programme included workshops on spelling, reading, pronunciation and professional writing in the digital age. The Spelling Bee Competition saw 20 participants, with Jabair (English Dept.) securing first place, followed by Chubarenla (English), Benmong (Political Science), and Lorenbeni (Sociology).
At Patkai Christian College (Autonomous), the Department of Education conducted a seminar on “The Contribution of Christian Missionaries to Education in India,” led by Dr. Albert M. Chawang. He traced missionary contributions to literacy, teacher training and women’s education across Northeast India, highlighting the works of Rev. Nathan Brown, Rev. Thomas Jones, Rev. William Pettigrew, and Dr. Edward Winter Clark, Rev. C. D. King, and Rev. Dr. Sidney W. Rivenburg. Meanwhile, the Departments of Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science & IT jointly organised an Interdepartmental Talk, with student presentations on relativity, cosmic mathematics and AI infrastructure. Certificates were awarded by Dean of Sciences, Thokchom Devala Devi.
The Department of English, MGM College, organised a Slam Poetry Competition under the theme “Poetry in Motion-Voices That Inspire” on September 19. Guest of honour Reji Abraham, principal of MGM Higher Secondary School, emphasised the role of literature in nurturing creativity and critical thinking. Winners were Narion L. Khuvung (first), Ethungbeni (second), and Joimie Angpuh (third).
At C Edge College, the 8th edition of the Public Speaking Championship was held on September 15 at GK Auditorium. After a two week training programme, five finalists competed in the grand finale. Hoto I Swu (BBA V Semester) emerged Champion with his speech “The Other Way Around,” followed by Ningthuiliu (First Runner Up) and Mughakivi (Second Runner Up). The event was sponsored by principal Emeritus Dr. Chubatola Aier.
