SHILLONG, JUN 4 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah Thursday said insurgency was no longer a major issue in Northeast and urged states to shift focus from law and order to protecting citizens’ rights and accelerating development through emerging technologies and new economic sectors.
Addressing the 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council here, Shah said the region had undergone a major transformation over the past decade, with peace replacing unrest and opening new opportunities for growth and investment. Posting on X, he said, “Insurgency is no longer a major issue in the Northeast. State governments should now focus on safeguarding citizens’ rights and ensuring development reaches every household.”
He urged Northeastern states to prepare for the future by building infrastructure and ecosystems for artificial intelligence, machine learning and blockchain to help the youth access global opportunities. Shah also called for mission-mode promotion of the region’s strengths in agarwood cultivation and processing, cross-border trade and health tourism to generate jobs and attract investment.
“The Northeast has immense potential in these sectors, which should be promoted to enhance incomes and employment,” he said. Claiming that the Centre had brought lasting peace, Shah said the region had shifted “from a hotspot of disputes to a hotspot of opportunities.”
He said NEC had become a key platform for coordination between the Centre and states, and stressed stronger collaboration to sustain growth momentum.
