Inter-collegiate elocution competition held

Inter-collegiate elocution competition on social media for degree level students was organised by Don Bosco College Kohima (DBCK) at Don Bosco Higher Secondary School (DBHSS) auditorium on June 29. 

Guest speaker Christ King Higher Secondary School (CKHSS) principal Fr. Ashuli Lonuo Linus in his keynote address said that, “we” were living in an era of information explosion due to rapid development of science and technology, especially in the area of information and communication. He added that social media such as facebook, instagram, twitter, snapchat, pinterest, WhatsApp, Linkedln, tik tok, discord etc, were integral components of ICT which have invaded into every sphere of human life.  
Touching on percentages, he said that global internet users have grown by 8.6 per cent over the past twelve months, with 350 million new users contributing to an overall total of 4.437 billion by the start of April 2019. Social media user numbers have also registered solid growth, increasing by more than 200 million since this time last year to reach almost 3.5 billion, stated Fr. Linus adding that roughly 98 per cent of the world’s social media users, this is more than 3.4 billion people access social platforms via mobile devices.
Linus said that social media has brought its advantages and disadvantages, whereby he pointed out that advantages included increase in knowledge, easy form of being connected, educational purposes as an extension of classroom discussion, offers benefit for business, builds brand for entrepreneurs etc. On the minus point, Linus said that many youngsters are glued to their mobile, computer, tablet which was a wastage of time and led to less interactions with family and friends. However, he also added that whether social media was a boon or a bane depended on how it is utilised.  
A competition on the topic “Social media” was participated by 10 colleges from Kohima and Dimapur and won by 1st Vane Domeh (Don Bosco College, Kohima), 2nd Katoli Yepthomi (Kros College, Kohima) and 3rd Santoki Pradhan (Kohima College, Kohima). 
Earlier, invocation was offered by Mhalenuo Belho and welcome address by programme competition convenor Dr. Velhou Koza.
