Zunheboto Forest Division observed the International Plastic Bag Free Day on July 3 at the office of the Divisional Forest Officer, Zunheboto for the staff of the Division as part of the celebration.
In a press release by the Divisional Forest Office, Zunheboto, stated that an awareness programme was held with an aim to raise awareness about the harmful effects of plastic bags and to promote sustainable alternatives.
Divisional Forest Officer, Obed Bohovi Swu, accompanied by staff and team from Youthnet visited the offices of Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent Police, Zunheboto and highlighted the significance of International Plastic Bag Free Day and encouraged to use sustainable bags (reusable bags- cloth, jute, paper etc) for daily use instead of “single use plastic bags” by the officers and staff.
Deputy Commissioner Zunheboto, Dharam Raj raised about harmful effect of plastics on one’s health as microplastics upon ingestion is harmful for the body and therefore need to reduce use of plastic products in the household items for daily use.
He also encouraged the department to create mass awareness about the harmful effect of plastics apart from environmental pollution.
The programme was followed by poster and sticker campaign activity across the town to create awareness about the harmful effect of plastics in general.
