DIMAPUR: International Widows’ Day was observed across Nagaland on June 23 with programmes organised in Shamator, Chümoukedima and Dimapur, highlighting the dignity, resilience and welfare of widows.
In Shamator, the programme was organised by Mission Shakti, Department of Social Welfare, with Deputy Commissioner Arikumba as special guest. In his address, the DC acknowledged the role of widows in society, stating that the day was not only to share grievances and challenges but also to recognise their strength and positive contributions. He urged widows to remain hopeful, strong and economically empowered to support their families and children. District Programme Officer Renchano Odyuo also encouraged widows to maintain a positive attitude, assuring them of continued departmental support.
In Dimapur, Pro Rural in collaboration with Circle of Hope and supported by Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC), Duncan Bosti, organised a free multi specialty medical camp at Signal Angami Village.
The camp promoted health awareness and provided accessible healthcare services to widows and community members. A total of 61 patients availed services including general health check ups, dental and eye consultations, vital signs assessment, random blood sugar testing, laboratory investigations and distribution of free medicines. Organisers expressed gratitude to the medical team, volunteers and supporters for the success of the initiative.
In Chümoukedima, Aloino Centre observed the day with a special programme at its office in Chekiye Village. Addressing the gathering on the theme “Rights, Dignity and Justice for Widows,” director Dr. Anshely Sumi stressed the need to protect widows’ rights, uphold their dignity and ensure equal opportunities in society.
