The “Global iodine deficiency disorders prevention day” was observed in Phek district with salt traders of Phek town, under the theme “Iodised salt, traders responsibilities”, on October 21.
A press release from district media officer, Phek, Kutolu Nakro stated that deputy chief medical officer (Dy CMO) Phek, Dr. Vethihulu highlighted the importance of iodine, disorders caused by iodine deficiency, source of iodine etc. Based on the theme, she also briefed the participants on the roles and responsibilities of salt traders.
Neilezo Tep, SDO (Civil) Phek, exhorted the participants saying that selling of iodized and quality salt was the trader’s responsibility in order to help prevent the community from acquiring iodine deficiency disorders.
In the program, various salt related demonstrations were also shown by district community mobilizer, Azenuo Mere, using local made salt, and commercial salts. The salt traders also signed a pledge to not sell non-iodized salts and promised to follow the roles and responsibilities given to them. Leaflets and posters on iodine were handed out to all the participants.
Earlier the invocation was pronounced by Rev. T. Alem, pastor Ao Baptist Church Phek; vote of thanks was delivered by Velato Nienu, district monitoring and evaluation assistant of DAPCU.
