Iran war: PM urges Covid-like readiness

NEW DELHI, MAR 23 (AGENCIES):

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday termed the West Asia crisis “worrisome”, warning that the conflict has serious implications for the global economy, civilian lives and India’s national security, while noting that nearly one crore Indians live and work in the region.
Addressing the Lok Sabha, Modi said the impact of the war would be long-lasting and stressed the need for preparedness, drawing parallels with the Covid period. He said the government was taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of Indian nationals, adding that assistance was being extended and discussions held with leaders of the concerned countries. He acknowledged casualties and missing Indians, stating support was being provided to affected families.
Modi said the government was closely monitoring shipping routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, and asserted that any disruption would be “unacceptable”. He noted that some Indian ships stranded near the Strait had safely returned following diplomatic efforts. Highlighting the stakes, he said a significant portion of India’s oil, gas and fertiliser imports passes through the route.
Reassuring the House, the Prime Minister said supplies of petrol, diesel and LPG remained stable. He added that while India imports about 60% of its LPG needs, domestic production has been increased and consumption prioritised. He also noted that energy security has been strengthened by diversifying imports from 27 to 41 countries, along with maintaining strategic reserves and additional inventories.
Modi said power plants have adequate coal stocks, ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply, and asserted that the fundamentals of the Indian economy remain strong. He added that the government was engaging stakeholders and would extend support to sectors under stress.
On agriculture, he said adequate food and fertiliser supplies were available, expressing confidence about the upcoming kharif season. Diplomatically, Modi reiterated India’s call for peace and opposition to attacks on civilians and infrastructure, while noting CBSE exams in the Middle East had been cancelled to safeguard students.
