IRCS Nagaland to hold ‘Walk for Humanity’ on May 8

CorrespondentKohima, MAY 2 (NPN):

Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) Nagaland State Branch will organise a walkathon under the theme “Walk for Humanity” on May 8 to mark World Red Cross Day. The walk will commence from the Red Cross Building and culminate at Old NST, Kohima.
Announcing this at a press conference on Saturday, IRCS Nagaland general secretary Akhale Khamo said the day commemorates the 198th birth anniversary of Jean-Henri Dunant, founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. She noted that this year’s global theme “United in Humanity” seeks to counter dehumanising trends and highlight the role of volunteers as members of the community serving fellow human beings.
Khamo informed that IRCS Nagaland had chosen to observe the day through a public walkathon to promote visibility and awareness of humanitarian service. She also outlined the organisational structure of the Red Cross at state, district and national levels, and appealed to citizens to enrol as members and contribute to humanitarian work.
Khamo stated that around 150–200 participants were initially expected, with approximately 180 registrations already received from schools, colleges and organisations. She added that the quick response team from Kohima village would also join the walk. Registration will be available online via Instagram and QR code, as well as on-site during the event. She expressed hope that the initiative would spread awareness about humanitarian service across Nagaland and beyond.
Convenor of the organising committee Khyochano TCK described the walkathon as a “bold public call to conscience” aimed at fostering unity and compassion. Registration will begin at 6 a.m. at the Red Cross office, followed by a flag-off, warm-up session led by the Bodybuilders and Fitness Association of Nagaland, and prayer. The walk will conclude at Old NST with short talks, refreshments and a motivational address by Dr Ato MLA.
She added that stalls and displays by partner organisations, including NSDMA, as well as vehicle displays by Seyie Auto, would be set up, along with volunteer registration booths. Participants will also be provided with special T-shirts and caps.
She acknowledged the support of NSDMA, Seyie Auto, Olive Springs, Decibel and Pele Khezhie, along with institutions, schools, colleges and organisations such as the Nagaland Voluntary Blood Donors Association and Nagaland Fitness Association.
IRCS Nagaland vice chairman Dr R Rose said the Senior Citizen Association of Nagaland had assured participation, emphasising that age was no bar in humanitarian service. Managing committee member Abou Mere added that NGOs such as Kripa Foundation and Users Network would actively participate, while bodybuilders would promote fitness awareness.
Joint secretary IRCS Kohima Santu Thapa stressed the importance of public awareness and community responsibility during disasters, urging citizens to join the walkathon and become registered members.
IRCS Nagaland, with branches across all 17 districts, has been serving the state for over 35 years, particularly during calamities and emergencies.
