IUN completes landmark research on ancient fortification engineering

DIMAPUR: International University Nagaland (IUN) has completed a monumental interdisciplinary research project mapping the complex military engineering of ancient hill settlements. The study culminated in a comprehensive 20 chapter framework titled “The Architecture of Defence: Fortification Engineering and Village Gate Geometry in Pre Colonial Nagaland.”
Executed under the academic supervision of founder chancellor Dr. Priyaranjan Trivedi and Dr. Zavise Rume, director, Academic Staff College, the project systematically decodes the physics, strategic botany and structural mathematics employed by Naga ancestors to build near impenetrable highland strongholds. Dr. Rume noted that the framework elevates traditional heritage from folklore to recognized science, analyzing ridge line settlements, load bearing mechanics of village gates (Kharu), and strategic use of toxic hedgerows.
Registrar Dr. Roopam Bachhil, who oversaw administrative execution, highlighted the global academic implications of the study. He said the framework maps distinct regional typologies, from Angami and Chakhesang terraced stone walls to Ao and Lotha ridge layouts, and citadel style fortresses of Eastern Konyak and Phom Angh palaces. He added that the final section examines the transition of fortifications during British encounters, shifting from rigid defense to guerrilla warfare. The 20 chapter framework covers topographical strategy, perimeter mechanics, village gate engineering, internal sectorization, tactical materials, comparative typologies and legacy analysis, including digital 3D reconstruction blueprints for preservation.
IUN expressed gratitude to cultural custodians, village elders and scholars who contributed to the project, reaffirming its commitment to bridging ancient wisdom with modern structural science. The book will be officially released on July 25, 2026 at the university campus.
