Minister for PHED & Cooperation, Government of Nagaland, Jacob Zhimomi graced the inaugural programme of the Chümoukedima Circle Chakhroma Youth Organisation (CCCYO) 1st Sports Meet on Monday at Sammogooting Stadium, Chümoukedima. The event, scheduled to run from October 20 to 25, marks a significant milestone for the Chakhroma community as it brings together youth from various villages under the Chümoukedima Circle to promote unity, sportsmanship and cultural pride.
Speaking at the programme, Zhimomi expressed his joy at being part of the historic occasion, noting that it was the first time such a sports event was being organised by the Chakhroma Youth Organisation in the district. “I’m happy to be representing all of you here today. This land and this moment are blessings from God,” he said, expressing gratitude to the organisers for their initiative.
The minister highlighted the divine providence that blessed the Chakhroma and Western Sumi communities with fertile soil and a harmonious environment for growth. He emphasized the importance of unity, moral integrity and positive social conduct among all communities in Nagaland. “The way we conduct ourselves and our interactions with others will shape the social and cultural practices across the state,” he remarked.
Reflecting on the role of sports and music, Zhimomi said that these activities have become powerful tools for fostering relationships and understanding among Naga tribes. He lauded the growing participation of Naga youths in sports, music and arts, and encouraged them to develop indigenous sports and music that reflect Naga identity while adapting to modern innovations and technology.
Zhimomi also commended the Government of India’s efforts to strengthen sports infrastructure and promote youth engagement under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, particularly through initiatives like the Fit India Movement. He emphasized that physical and mental fitness are key to building a healthy and progressive society.
“Sportsmanship, character and discipline are vital. When our body is fit, our mind is sound and only then can we make healthy decisions and bring about meaningful development,” he said.
Zhimomi further underlined the significance of the Hornbill Festival as a symbol of unity and cultural pride for Nagas, calling it a collective achievement that showcases the state’s soft power to the world. He urged the youth to uphold their cultural roots while embracing new opportunities.
Speaking on the nation’s demographic strength, the minister noted that 70% of India’s population comprises youth, describing them as the country’s greatest resource. He encouraged the young athletes to aim high and contribute meaningfully to Nagaland’s progress.
“Today, as we gather for the first-ever sports meet of the Chakhroma Circle, we celebrate unity, discipline and opportunity. I wish all young sportsmen and women the very best. May you grow into good athletes, responsible citizens, and role models for others,” he concluded, assuring his continued support for youth development in the district.
The inaugural programme was also graced by president of CYO, Medochüzo Medoze, as the guest of honour. The event was chaired by treasurer of CCCYO, Meyiesinuo Medoze, invocation by pastor of NCRC & Prayer Centre, Sovima Avilie Puro; welcome address by president of CCCYO, Kezhangtuo Zhotso; and a special presentation by Colored Keys and CCCYO female executive members. The oath-taking was administered by assistant wrestling secretary, Shührhösül Zhotso.
The sports meet will feature a range of competitions and activities.
