Former chief minister and governor Padma Bushan Dr SC Jamir lamented that governance in the State has totally collapsed and only giving rise to extra-constitutional authorities who were running the de facto parallel administration, guided by their whims and fancies.
Dr. Jamir said this while speaking at the silver jubilee function of Christina Memorial Higher Secondary School (CMHSS) here on Tuesday on the theme “Refine Lives – The Hope of Tomorrow”. He questioned the people of Nagaland on whether they were prepared to live perpetually in a state of uncertainty and confusion and asked them to ponder over who was responsible for all the mess.
Dr. Jamir who is the sole surviving member of the Naga People’s Convention (NPC) that formulated the 16 Point Agreement which formed the basis for creation of Nagaland state in 1963, lamented that Nagaland today was witnessing a rudderless political movement . He said Nagas were facing both seen and unseen forces working to the detrimental of healthy growth of this beautiful land of the Nagas.
He said the land of Christians has become a land of factions and almost all of them were at daggers drawn in the name of Naga sovereignty.
While pursuing the common political goal, he said the Naga political movement had resulted in fragmentations with multiple groups instead of a united body, thereby defeating the very objective of the Naga movement built by the pioneers.
Dr. Jamir encouraged Nagas to gather courage and honesty, qualities which have remained dormant for past several decades because of insurgency. He also urged the present leadership, both underground and overground, to redefine the spirit of uniqueness of Naga political history in sync with contemporary socio-politico realities and chart the future of Nagaland everyone dreamt of.
In order to make this dream a reality, Jamir stressed that the first and topmost step was solution of the Naga political issue so that a new dawn of peace and normalcy adorned the Nagas. He said under such a congenial environment, there would be ample opportunities for human development without any hinderance and the dream for a united, peaceful, progressive, transparent and prosperous Nagaland could be fulfilled.
He remarked that the people should own the responsibility for the kind of pitiable conditions that they were living in, adding there was no justification for shifting the responsibility to others.
Jamir threw the gauntlet on the younger generation of Nagas whether they accept the present fate as their destiny or opted for a better and brighter future elsewhere. He expressed the hope that with the courage and determination of younger generation, the Nagas would rise up and surmount the current situation.
He said Nagaland today was on the verge of collapse politically, economically, socially and even religiously and that there was hardly anything positive.
