NEW DELHI, NOV 5 (AGENCIES): Supreme Court on Thursday said the High Powered Enquiry Committee (HPEC), probing violence during student protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar in July, had received very few complaints from those affected.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, also comprising Justice Joymalya Bagchi, said the panel could not arrive at any finding without sufficient material, PTI reported.
The bench directed that all petitions, videos and complaints relating to the violence be forwarded to the committee, chaired by former Supreme Court judge R. Subhash Reddy. Its members include former Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Ravi Shankar Jha, former Delhi High Court judge Shalinder Kaur, former CBI director Rishi Kumar Shukla and retired Meghalaya DGP L.R. Bishnoi. The court asked the committee to submit interim reports regularly.
The panel said it had issued notices in 149 newspapers inviting complaints about the violence during a march to Parliament on July 20, but received very few submissions online or in physical form. It issued another appeal on October 21.
The Supreme Court constituted the committee in August to investigate alleged violence against student protesters and police personnel during demonstrations at Jantar Mantar and elsewhere. The protests demanded the resignation of then Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET-UG paper leak in May. Jantar Mantar became the focal point before demonstrations spread elsewhere. Pradhan resigned on July 25, after which the protests ended during the same period across the country.
