John Yesong Memorial School (JYMS), Phelungre, marked its silver jubilee with a grand celebration commemorating 25 years of educational service and community growth. The event was graced by Secretary, Work & Housing, Government of Nagaland, John Tsulise Sangtam, as special guest, and Bishop of Kohima, Most Rev. Dr. James Thoppil, as guest of honour.
Addressing the gathering, John Tsulise Sangtam shared his personal journey in public service, emphasizing that “learning is a lifelong process and the willingness to learn is a choice.” He paid tribute to the late John Yesong, the first catechist of Tuensang district, who played a pivotal role in initiating schooling in the region. Sangtam encouraged students to pursue academic excellence with respect for their teachers, highlighting the importance of hard work and divine guidance.
During the thanksgiving mass, Bishop James Thoppil reflected on the significance of the silver jubilee, describing it as a time for gratitude, renewal and hope. He lauded the school’s perseverance and commitment over the past 25 years and wished the community continued growth and harmony.
The celebration began with a welcome address by parish priest, Rev. Fr. Philip Magh, followed by the blessing and unfurling of the Jubilee monolith by the special guest and guest of honour. A Jubilee Memorial Tree was planted by Sangtam, Bishop Thoppil, and Jefin Sam, OC, ‘D’ Coy. The jubilee flag was unfurled by Chumliba, and Sr. Lucy Jinger SABS, an alumna of the school.
The felicitation programme featured a variety of presentations including prayer dances, performances by tiny tots, special songs and speeches. The school report was delivered by head teacher Chothrili. Principal of JYMS, Rev. Fr. Marius Patton, offered the vote of thanks, and Rev. Fr. Thomas Toretkiu concluded the event with a benediction and blessing of the Jubilee meal, which was shared among all attendees.
