Kapil Sibal calls for disqualification of Trinamool Congress’s rebel MPs

NEW DELHI, JUN 14 (PTI): Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Sunday called for the disqualification of rebel Trinamool Congress MPs, saying they cannot merge with a political party as that can happen only if the TMC wishes to do so.
Sibal also said Indian democracy has become the “theatre of the absurd”.
His remarks came after a rebellion in the TMC deepened, with dissident MPs meeting Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and seeking a separate seating arrangement in the House, while announcing their merger with the Nationalist Citizens Party.
In a post on X, Sibal said, “TMC rebels: Will merge with Nationalist Citizens Party (NCP). Indian democracy has become the ‘theatre of the absurd’. A joke!” “The rebels of the TMC legislative party cannot merge with a political party; that can happen only if the TMC wished to do so!” he added.
“Disqualify them!” Sibal said. Speaking to reporters after meeting the speaker, rebel TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar claimed that two-thirds of the party’s Lok Sabha members have submitted a letter seeking recognition as a separate group.
“Two-thirds of the TMC MPs have given a letter to the speaker for a separate seating arrangement. We will merge with the Nationalist Citizens Party and support the NDA,” she said.
Senior TMC leader and Lok Sabha MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay said the dissident camp has already merged with the Nationalist Citizens Party, which he described as a recognised regional party.
